USB Turntable
« on: December 01, 2007, 12:03:07 am »
So Bev and I usually get into Christmas before Christmas. We call them "I love you!" gifts. LOL

She gave me a USB turntable. This is a unit that will play vinyl records through RCA plugs or a USB port. There is the appropriate pre-amp board in the turntable to handle the output to the USB. I drop the output from the turntable into Audacity (freeware). There are many formats to drop into but I settled on WAV (Microsoft 4 bit IMA ADPCM). After snagging the LAME MP3 encoder I then compress to a 192 bit rate MP3 file. There are way many ways to edit which I have not explored yet but here from the Laboratory of the Utility Muffin Research kitchen is my first raw effort. Understand this vinyl was purchased in 1975 and played and partied to more than a few times.

Right click and save target as appropriate to your OS.

Of course this file is supplied and hosted for educational purposes only. Come to think of it this is what I was partying to instead of educating myself. LOL What the hell - live, learn, love. Thanks Bev for the most excellent geekable gift!

David

Now that is a geekable! Not in the everyday pile of geekables, anyway.

Nice... downing the MP3 as I write.
Take care,

Played a lot with the turntable lately since I have a few days off from the job. One thing I have discovered is if you crap on your albums (which often happened despite the best efforts) the Audacity program can work some things smoother but it is a lengthy job and often the results are less than hoped for. Modestly good to good vinyl though is easy to grab and convert. Seems that the stuff I listened to with the frisbee are in better shape than the ones I listened to with the mug. Anyhow, here are a few snaps of the thing in action.

For your educational endeavors here is a little pleasure of mine from 1972. It's funny how I can remember the record store I bought this at. It has long since closed and most are but I can still see it in my minds eye. A cool place with a kick-arse selection of just about everything.

I should warn you I like my mp3's phat.
