Linux on TV
« on: January 26, 2004, 09:44:15 pm »
I been watching the National Geographic channel and the History Channel more then usual lately and I have noticed a lot of Linux / IBM commercials.

In the commercials Linux is supposed to be an Albino kid that everyone overlooked or ignored, but now its everywhere.

The commercials are cool i think.

the Forbes.com site has a lot of Linux advertisements from IBM.

I dont think I have ever seen any other besides the one with the albino.

I still dont full understand why IBM is behind these commercials. Will research.

i believe that IBM is behind the commercials because it is the first major PC/Server producer to push out products with Linux operating systems.  basically imagine compaq making nothing but linux machines...  scary  :anxious:

I believe Just about all computer manufactures sell computers with Linux preinstalled, but those PCs are mainly servers.

While I was in the Dell lobby they had thery Dell magazine on the coffee table and the front page was an article about Linux in the enterprise. I think have that magazine somewhere, but never read it thoroughly.

The "albino" add is cool. I believe they were shooting for the "hidden meaning" concept with this one. I compare it to the infamous Super Bowl Apple add. The impact is in the art not the science.

IBM has a series of "Linux in the enterprise environment" comercials. If you watch Screen Savers on Tech TV you will see a slew of them. The others tend to highlight the advantages of Linux as a smart business solution rather than parade art.

I suppose that we are not that far from seeing adds as Linux for the desktop environment also but for now IBM is focusing on the business side, probably because at the moment that is where the money is and where Linux has a solid hold. Once business shifts towards Linux (inevitable?) the users will become more comfortable as that usage will filter down towards their interfaces with the server applications. Once the workers get comfortable with a different operating system then Linux will start to see a drift into the mainstream desktop environment. Then it's just a matter of time before good ole "soccer mom" is configuring mutt.

As a personal desktop user I am still way more productive in Windows.
