Kmail and Kbiff
« on: January 23, 2004, 07:15:55 pm »
What I really like about Novells Groupwise is its Notifier. A simple program that alerts you of email in your Inbox. Groupwise does not have to be running, just the Notify, once you recieve mail you click the Notifier and Groupwise opens. I have been looking for a program like this for Outlook in Windows but have not found a decent one. The all in one Instant Messenger Trillian has a Plugin you can install that checks POP emails and displays a popup in the system tray telling you so. I quit using a messenger service a long time ago so I lost that feature. Outlook has always had a Pop Up and a System Tray notifier but Outlook has to be running, and although there is a registry hack for older Outlooks to minimize to the system tray, Outlook is still running, and the Pop Up is very obtrusive, it will not go away unless you click it. In Outlook 2003 they improved the notifier. It now tells you who the sender is and the subject line. They also made an option to have Outlook Minimize to the system tray, instead of haveing to hack the registry. But Outlook still has to be running.

When I used Red Hat 8 I used Evolution as my email client. It is the closest thing to an Outlook out there, it has just about all the features, plus the addition of News Feeds (RSS) in the today screen. I also liked Evolution because it synced with the Palm m125 i was using at the time. Now that I use the Pocket PC I have no need to sync with Linux, and the reason why I still have to boot XP a few times a day. Also, to use Evolution the GNOME desktop has to be loaded but I use KDE. I am trying not to bloat this Install so I chose not to install Evolution and GNOME. Instead I am using Kmail.

I really don't like Kmail, but I am getting used to it. A lot of people, including me, complain about one thing; you can not turn off the preview pane for emails. You can shrink to the point that you cant see it but when doing this you have to double click an email to open it, and you have to close the email windows in order to Reply, Forward, and what not, at least I have not found a setting to change this. As far as notifiers, the hunt was on again. I did a few searches and tried a few apps. The ones I found reminded me of the Windows notifiers I tried. To many blows and whistles. At last I settled with Kbiff. KBiff was already installed on my system. It sits in the System Panel and I get a pop up and sound when I get mail. It doesnt tell me who its from, and i have to either close it or click Mailer to open Kmail.

I am looking for a notifier that will tell me who its from, closes by itself if i do nothing, give me an option to delete. The Outlook 2003 Alert Window does this, but Outlook has to be running. So close.

Many of you will never know what Linux apps will look like, at least not until its to late and your stuck in a world that used to bow down to Bill Gates, and thats why I like to post screen shots and will post more as I go along and rant about stuff.

I dont know about you but I think Outlook Express sucks arse!  I have since purchased the newest version of Trillian and the e-mail notifier works like a champ.  It fades away in a few seconds rather than it waiting for you to click it.

Outlook Express does suck arse! In the begining it was sufficient for checking Hotmail and POP mail, but now i use Outlook, and it is way better. Calendar, Notes, Tasks, Journal, and of course all of it is Synced with the Pocket PC.

I use the same version of Trillian, but I hardly ever get on the messengers anymore. I never did get the hang of its IRC capabilites. To much toggling of windows.
