updated to Win2k
« on: September 25, 2002, 07:56:04 pm »
last night i went ahead an upgraded my windows 98 to win2k. I went with the upgrade rather then the Clean Install. I figure I will run it to see how it goes, and if things start acting up ill do the clean install.

i had split my little 10gig drive into two awhile back with partition magic so i can make sure my media files wouldnt be lost. i then tried to ghost my C drive but ghost would not see my fixed disk. So last night i used PowerQuests Drive Image (these guys make Partition Magic as well) to clone my OS to cd. The software is pretty damned kewl if ya ask me. You have the option of saving the image to a seperate partition or directly to CD. I chose directly to cd. it didnt take but 15 minutes to image the C drive to three cds.

i have only ran into a few hardware and software issues because of the win2k upgrade. the only things i have not got going is my DVD player software and my sound is kind of funky, Creative has this lighting sound file that plays on boot and it is loud as crap!! everything else is normal. I havent tinkered much with it though.

i downloaded all security patches and all service paks for the OS. So its looking good so far!

Very cool! I was looking into "ghosting" programs. I like the fact that PowerQuest will split the "ghosted image file" into multple CD's. I am definately interested in this program. In my mind this would be THE perfect way to backup the entire drive without having to invest in another drive and mucking around with drive recognition. This plus the fact that I hate the idea of just having a "spare" drive sitting as a backup device.

I am ready to splurge for the Partition Magic deal also. I want to spit my 2 drives into a more sensical set-up.

I lost the links that Tim had at his forum but there were some excellent ones posted there about drive partitioning schemes that were very informative. If you have them or run into any good links let me know... I need to research some of the ways people partition drives!

Right now I am running a dual boot Windows ME/Red Hat Linux and I want to turn that into a Windows XP/Red Hat Linux setup and keep data in seperate partitions from the actual OS's. It seems to make a lot more sense as far as backup/data integrity issues. From what I am reading Partition Magic is the way to go as far as partitioning goes and if you defrag first the process is more or less a no brainer.

Also it will be interesting to see if your upgrade to Win2K resolves your issues with Word that you were having ...

I think the drive partition schemes was from the Ultimate Boot Disk site:

http://www.startdisk.com/Web1/ubd/ubd.htm

After it loads click the Drive Partitioning link on the nav frame to the left. Interesting stuff, for sure.

i have not needed to use Word long of to see if it will lock up. i'll have to make something up to test it.

i finally got the dvd software to go. The decoders for 98 were not compatible with win2k and it was a bitch looking for newer ones.

i am now using PowerDVD. The software came with the proper decoders. I did, however, had to update my video drivers.

i rememer Big_T telling me awhile back that the sound on win2k is better. I agree with him now. I hardly get any distortion at high volumes. the Windows Log On sound is still loud as crap though.

That would be the link I lost! Thanks. Glad to hear the sound is better on your present setup. What the hell is it all worth if the tunes sound like crap!
