I read that ... thought it was kinda funny. Then I got my new `Linux Magazine`and was reading the letters to the editor. People were pissed as hell that the previous issue had an add for Microsoft and a free CD included ... a 120 day evaluation copy of `Windows Services for Unix 3.0`. The editor basically threw it back and made a joke about how he took the MS add money and bought a new PowerBook. But in his intro remarks he makes a point that Linux is making strides in the marketplace but that MS isn't going anywhere soon. He talks a case of co-existence. Most businesses with `tech` don't have an all windows set-up or all Linux. Each has a place and a time. Hell you can network the two OS's together. Linux has edges that Win doesn't and Win beats the pants off Linux in other areas.

Not sure why I mention it all ... perhaps because I am in my Windows install for a bit now (trying to get  MS DOS 6.22 to take on a drive I had to format (locked by Fortress)) Long story and I'll get into it some other time. My point now is `music`. Sounds better in Win. A lot of apps I miss are Win apps. Windows has been at this OS thing for a long time. They may not be prefect and the money side of their equation sucks but hey ... sometimes, some places, some apps ... you get what you pay for. Linux has a good start ... they have a ways to go yet.

Free as in freedom of choice. Run what you want, when you want, for whatever you are willing to pay.

Just a thought ...

On the music theme I should point out that I dragged out my old Boston Acoustic digital speakers and hooked them up to the win box. My Linux install won't produce a digital signal for these speakers so I opted to buy a dingy set of analog speakers for the Linux box.

Just doesn't compare ....

there definately has to be a coexistance between the two. Just like Ford and Chevy.

and speaking of sound, on my win2k/RH box i have a Creative SoundBlaster Live Value card with a 6 Point surround sound Creative Soundbridge speaker system, and it sounds pretty damned good in both OSes. There is a lot more barse out of RH though.

My XMMS craps out every now and then though.

But that sound card is basic as crap, i dont know if Rh can pick up a more advanced Creative sound card.

That's funny because what I am missing in RH is barse. XMMS is fine if you listen to a lot of MP3's as that is the only format the EQ works in. Other than that the player just isn't that great a thing. My problem is more than likely the speakers. Since I can't get digital signal conversion in RH I had to resort to analog speakers and I cheaped out on them. With the Win drive I can plug in my digital speakers and get a much richer/fuller sound experience.

Creative wrote a dandy driver for Win to drive the digital speakers but a comparable driver is not available for Linux.

Just an FYI. The XMMS site says that Red Hat frigged the RPM package for their player (besides leaving out the MP3 support). They (highly) suggest that you uninstall the Red Hat package that came with the distro and load the RPM package they offer at their site.

I did that and the XMMS player runs better than it did before (as far as response).

hmm, well definately do that when i bring her up here and i get online.

Although, when i bought that pc and card i was told it was going to have digital out, it doesnt, it uses the same analog jacks. So thats probably why i get good sound and barse..
