Microsoft Office Replaced!

In Houston, TX Bill Gates' MS Office is being replaced with a Web Based Office Suite.

30,000 city Computers, which include city workers, to libraries and free for all 3 million city residents.

The software is called SimDesk. From what little I have read it is pretty damned Cool. With SimDesk the documents you create are saved to its server and can then be accessed through any web based device, from a laptop to a palm pilot. This is cool because when i work on some sort of document for school i upload to this website. But in order to edit it or view it the computer i am on has to have Word installed.

I heard about that - and now there are crowds of Office Suites that can replace MS Office... Open Office is killer, 50 meg download and has a word processor, spreadsheet, photo editor, and a presentation (powerpoint) program that are all compatible (mostly) with MS Office.

I like AbiWord for instances where hard drive space is an issue, as it is only a word processor.

I also have used 602PC Pro Suite, which also is kind of fuller featured - word processor, spreadsheet, photo editor, and power-point thing...

All of the above are free (602 requires a registration, if I remember correctly).

on my Linux boot i got Open Office on there. I never played around with it much but it looked pretty straighforward and yep, i was able to open MS documents and edit them.
