greetings from iPod Touch
« on: March 13, 2008, 01:41:08 am »
Total impulse buy, but this thing is way cool!

I love having a wifi enabled browser that is so small and usable. The DS's browser is so far behind this... Much faster, although still no flash. There is a YouTube app that works great. They just dropped a developer's kit, so third party apps should be dropping directly.

So far, I like, allot.

Mini Safari makes everything look perfect when you hold it sideways. The browser flows pages very well, and it works so much better than the DS or the Pocket PC's browsers.

Another cool thing is that it is made for your fingers - no little stick to loose. The onscreen keyboard is way cool. I had been looking at them for awhile, but got to playing big-time the other day and I just loved it. I NEVER impulse buy like this - in fact, I had been eyeing the Eee PC hard - till now.

The Google apps in 1.1.3 are awesome. Maps, YouTube, there is an email that does GMail or Yahoo or whatever, contacts, memo, weather - and it also plays music and video. The only thing that six is no flash, so some podcasts I used to listen to via flash based players I have to roll a different way for. You can still stream things, and you can listen to your music while surfing, too.

I typed every bit of this with the onscreen keyboard without much of a problem... This is one sweet gadget.

pic coming up - hard to take without a blurry shake or a flashback.

1.1.3 - I could have gotten the old version for $20 cheaper, but decided to go with the new and not have to buy the update. Not sure what the differences are app-wise, but my understanding is that the mail app wasn't in earlier versions. I also think that this thing might have some GPS capabilities at some point (might just be the phone one) because the maps deal says it can't figure my current location. I have seen rumblings that maybe this will get worked out. I don't see why not - how hard would it be to figure out a general location based upon IP address?

Well, the laters version of Google Maps has the ability to find out where you are using Cell Phone Tower Triangulation, but your touch is not a phone. So maybe Google Maps does know you are not on a phone. The feature was there on my Mogul Pocket PC phone but it never worked, BUT we just got an update for my Mogul and I got REAL GPS now. Its awesome and so accurate its scary!!

and IP address would just give you the city i blieve. you in a big town?

All pics thus far are blurry... I will keep trying, but here is the best one I got so far, after doing the "enhance" thing. It will give you an idea of layout, etc... To me it looks just like if I was on the computer. I can also portrait the Touch and it makes everything smaller. You can zoom in on stuff, and the way they did it was so easy - an opening pinch with two fingers on the screen zooms in and the opposite zooms back out. I also like that the address bar "disappears" when you scroll down the page (I scrolled down slightly on this thread in the pic so you can see more of the page). You can go back to the top by hitting the top  bar, which has a clock running on it at all times - a nice touch!

No camera on the Touch - iPhone has one.

I am sure the GPS thing is probably a iPhone thing. We are fairly close to a large town, so it could still be somewhat useful.

I already have more MP3 players than I need - so why did I get this?

1. Browser - for me, mobile web is a thing. I have been looking for a good experience - via wifi (not wanting to pay for a data plan with the cell phone). This one is great, so far.

2. YouTube - this is a very cool app - I search for Beatles vids and watch like crazy!

3. Maps - very cool and could come in handy.

4. Oh yeah - it plays music, too. While I surf. Hmmm...

Wishlist - ebook reader capable of textfiles - I am hoping that one will come out. I know I can jailbreak the thing, and that since 1.1.3 I can "bookmark" a page to the desktop and it will "stay" and somewhat hold your place when wifi isn't available, but I'd rather read my textfiles. There is a thing that you can nail for a jailbroken iPhone / Touch, but I am hoping to not have to go to that. For 1.1.3 you seem to have to downgrade the OS and yatta yatta yatta etc... maybe one day I'll get froggy - but like I said, surfing is the biggie for me.

ah, if you still had your site you couldve uploaded all your text files to it and read them on the web, but then youd be only able to do that with a connection.

what about those Text to JPG utilities ive seen. So you can read your files as a photo slide show. what do you think?

I've played with text to jpg converters before - I might try that. I am more impressed with this thing the longer I play. I was doing some YouTube tonight, searching for everything from Hendrix's Woodstock performance to Ronnie James Dio - kind of like my own personal video jukebox. Awesome!

sorry - not showing. I get a small graphic of a box for anything that doesn't have a plugin. if this is a YouTube vid then I need to click a link to the YouTube page and then I can click it and will open the YouTube app.
