VNC
« on: March 25, 2004, 02:00:28 am »
WTF is VNC?

VNC stands for Virtual Network  Computing.

VNC lets you control a PC over a network or through the internet by setting up a client and a server. The server being the PC which you will be connecting to. THe client or viewer, is what you control the other PC with.

more info can be found from its creators here:

www.realvnc.com

the most popular "distrubution" of VNC is TightVNC

www.tightvnc.com

it is optimized for better performance over DIal Up and even better perfomance over Broadband...

Did i mention that is free and Open Source...awe yeah...

I have only heard and read about VNC but not until i started working at the clinic did I use it. There are two way to connect to a machine. One being through the View software. Two through a web browser which uses a Java Applet to display the remote PC. The Java version sux in my opion. Why? Because I am used to remoting in with Netmeeting or PC Anywhere. But the Web/Java version comes in handy when not on your own dedicated computer where you have the Viewer installed. So I like VNC.

What makes me Love VNC is that there is a Viewer for the Pocket PC which allows me to take control of VNC servers, which are all over the place at work...

the Pocket PC VNC Viewer Client can be  found here:
http://www.cs.utah.edu/~midgley/wince/vnc.html

Simply copy the EXE to your POcket Pc and run it. It wouldnt run from my SD card so be sure and copy it to your Pocket PC itself...

Installed on all Pocket PCs is an app called Terminal Services which allows you to connect to a remote PC as well. I tried this once and it screwed up all my Desktop Icons and it didnt give me the ability to Send Alt-Ctrl-Deletes. I really cant compare and contrast the two because I never used Terminal Services again...

I really cant display screenshots because you will see this. But there is screen shot of my Winamp in the Wifi and Winamp posts....

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

i gots a question.  i want to access my home PC and its files and programs from work, but i have no way of accepting a "takeover" from here.  would vnc work for that so i can "theoretically" play my games from work, or at least set them in action?  or would i need something else?  and what would i need to set up where (which pc needs which software)?  the remote control they have here at work wouldnt be bad, but i dont have (or want) netware on my PC at home.

Tony and I tried to access are PCs from the OAG and were unsuccessful. It all has to do with the way the firewalls are setup. Remoteing in to your PC requires certain ports to be open.

You can try VNC withouth even having to install anything on the PC there at worrk. On your PC at home download tightvnc and take all the defaults and make sure and check to have VNC run as a service.

Set up your Firewall at home to let yourself remotely log in. Open port 5800. If you are note behind a firewall then dont worry about this. If you using the XP firewall, take it down, or set it to allow connections from port 5800. Also, tell your router which PC is going to accept those connections, if you have a router....

Then from a webbrowser at work point to http://xxx.xx.xxx:5800, where the Xes is your IP address. You will have to have Java installed, so it might ask you to install it.

let me know how it goes. Best thing to do would be to call someone to ask them to remote in. I am usually home by ten or so. Call me up, better yet, install SKype and call me that way, username is digisal.\\
