Google Deskbar
« on: January 23, 2004, 04:57:03 am »
Cool little app that craps in the task bar. Do a Ctrl - ALt - G and type your search query and the results will open in a little window above your desktop. A screen shot below. I use a standard address bar on the very top of my desktop to do searches or to go to sites, but i kind of like this app. Has some cool little features.
Check it out.

Interesting ... I may give it a run (google deskbar).

Any comments on Newsbin Pro? I notice it on your desktop.

I dont like the interface for Newbin Pro. I am always trying to find different NewsReaders to see if downloading Binaries can get any easier, but nothing can seem to beat Xnews. Newsbin has a lot of bells and whistles. I am in no way saying that downloading binaries from Xnews is hard, it is super easy, but supposedly Newsbin Pro was better at it. The only thing i liked was the Filtering of Subject lines. You can have it alter what gets displayed, whether it be just the name of the file posted or whole shebang. I would rather have just the file name, because people usualy post a Request and file at the same time. Sometimes i think I am downloaing a specific file but in reality its just a request for the file, so i end up downloading some file i dont need or want....

After i posted this i was messing around with the features. It has some very handy shortcuts. When doing a search the default is to search the web, but if you do CTRL- L for example, it will do a "I'm feeling lucky" search. This is the equivalant of doing CTR-Enter in the address bar of IE, type digisal and then CTRL - L it will take yuou to www.digisal.com. There are other shortcuts for Images, Newsgroup Postings, News. Very cool. You can even customize the searches to other sites. By default it added a Movie Review search from a website, i forgot which one. So lets say you wanted to do searches from my forums you would input the Search address for the search feature here, and then arseign a keyboard shortcut, or just select this kind of search from the menu. Search addresses can be kind of tricky though. For example the address for the Google Search is something like:
http://www.google.com/search?q=\{@}&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

This is from my Konqueror search shortcut, but you can get the idea.

Other feature include moving the search results to IE, or opening links to IE instead of to the little doohicky window.

I really like it.
