Cracking Down On File Sharing
« on: April 25, 2003, 12:26:02 pm »
Well, the big guys who took down Napster are at it again, they are always at it actually.

They went after Verizon this time though. Apparently the bad guys want the names of two Verizon internet users who were sharing craploads of music. Verizon didnt want to give it to them, so they went to court and lost....

http://apnews.myway.com//article/20030424/D7QK5LB81.html

so who is to say they cant come after us now. i usually stay away from Kazaa now, unless there is something i really need. I wont be surprised if File Sharing over the net comes to a stop in the very near future. Its going to suck! Music CDs are going to get even more expensive.

They can plug holes but there are always others. File sharing has been and always will be one step ahead of the game. Just gets to be a pain in the arse.

I basically stopped using P2P several months ago because of several reasons.

1.) A lot of files are encoded by dick heads. Quality has gone down and frankly on a dial-up connection waiting 20-25 minutes for a piece of crap to write to my hard drive sucks big ones. It's like a bad virus ... some one screws the pooch encoding and then it gets propagated over the P2P network.

2.) My encoding scheme of choice at the moment is ogg vorbis and you just don't see it a lot on P2P.

I am enjoying just borrowing CD's from friends, encoding with my preferred scheme and sharing what I got with other friends (grarse roots sorta thing if you grew up in the 60's). Funny thing is I still buy a fair share of CD's ... encode them to the hard drive and it just makes it easier to load on the fly and enjoy.

Thanks for the link ... I remember reading that now. I get so involved with `geek` crap that I put things on the back burner till later. I will look into it soon and let you know how it went. I have tried several news readers in Linux and it would be interesting to see this system translated over to the other side.

You probably already tried Knode but I just did and tells me it is not capable of receiving MIME type.

I have not clue what you guys are talking about.

Most of the time I don't either. I just like to explore most things digital. I learned a long time ago that the only way to go was to play. Most of my early exploring usually broke stuff. I would get mad. Then I learned how to fix my mistakes. If I made them more than once I knew how to back track and restore. Most of what I do these days is in `Linux`. For me it is the ultimate geek thing.

For instance tonight I tried to print a few snaps to glossy photo paper. In Windows it is not an issue but in Linux it took some digging around to find the right resolution settings and paper settings. Wound up screwing the pooch on about 3 sheets of paper (one had the encoding numbers printed real nice and glossy) but I eventually got it.

People get hung up on what they can and can't do with computers. I think that is a hinderence to using them for what they are meant for. Having fun and hanging out with toys. Press buttons ... watch the lights flash ... then learn to contol the lights flashing ...

For me it's all about stretching the limits of the system. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't. So what ... f*k half the time it's fun trying to break crap anyway.

In a nut shell what I was trying to do here is grab a bunch of chopped up mp3 files and reconstruct them so they play. Linux won't let me do it quite yet but then there are a lot of things Linux won't let you do the easy way. For me it's no big deal cause it really does seem like a long way to walk just to get an mp3 file. For others maybe not ... that's the joy of the beast ... you make it what you want it to be.
