the plan was to take a nap right after work, since its cold out here! its perfect sleep weather.

I decided to look around and try and figure out what was going on. Last nite for some reason i was able to HotSync the palm. I couldnt remember what i had different to make it work though! it was very late.

So I went at it today. I was looking around my device manager, for the longest time my Modem has not been installed properly i havent got the right drivers for it. I had the same problem with Win2k, eventually i found the drivers with Windows Update. I tinkered with that but no go.

I was trying to find something which would tell me what program or hardware is using my COM1 which is not letting my HotSync use it.

I went to System Information (start, programs, accessories, system tools, System Information) and browsed. I came to Running Tasks. The info there was the same that is given when i hit Alt Ctrl Delete, then Tasks.

So then I started killing Tasks, one by one and trying to HotSync after everykill. I killed a few and nada, then i killed one and i was HotSynching!! but i forgot what i had killed...ooops.... so i refreshed System Information and Exported the current Running Tasks to a txt file. Then i rebooted, and got the same error. Went back to System Information and Exported the Running Tasks again to compare.

wcescomm.exe was the only Task that was not present on Both. System Information told me it was locatedL
c:\program files\microsoft activesync\wcescomm.exe

crap, thats what i use to sync the Pocket PC. My Pocket PC is hooked via USB, why would it take over COM1? So check this out. I connected my Pocket PC, it synched, then I hit my HotSync on the Palm and voila! It synched.

Crap again. I went to the Connection Settings in Active Sync and unchecked "Allow Serial Cable or infrared connection to this COM port". Rebooted and all is well between HotSync and Active Sync.

So, until Active Sync knows its connected via USB it is looking for my Dell Axim in all the Ports, unless i tell it not to.

And in Conclusion, the end.
