Long File Names and NERO
« on: March 11, 2003, 10:58:50 pm »
well, crap. Awhile i go i burnt an application to a CD, but i never installed it myself off the CD. I installed from the Hard Disk. A friend once tried to install off of my CD and he couldnt get it to go. I should have looked into it then, but he didnt need the App that bad so i put it in the back shelf. Earlier today a friend tried to install the same App from my disc and it wouldnt go. She was getting the same error. It was missing some files.

So i burnt another copy and tried to install off of CD. i got the same error. My other friend, Rick, had mentioned that some of the file names were wrong on the CD. And sure enough when Nero tries to burn the files it does not burn the whole name. It only lets me burn file names with 25 characters. That sux because it has a feature that should let me burn up to 35 characters. A tried burning using other burning options, like ISO 96660 and Mode 1, and UDF ISO, but i got the same crap.

SO, using WinRAR, I made a self-extracting file containing all the files. So when i click this one file, all the files will be extracted to the Hard Disk and then the Setup file for the App will run. I am going to burn this self-extracting file now and try and run it from the disk to see if it works this way.

oh what fun.

it worked.

What the hell is a self-extracting file?

we have all seen ZIP files. But in order to UNZIP these files we need an extractor program of some sort. Like WinZIP, or even a newer version of Windows will come with an ectractor already installed.

But if you have a self-extracting file any PC can open it without any third party applications. these are EXE files rather then ZIP files.

Double click and you are good to go.

Now that is interesting - I have messed with a few versions of Linux that were UMSDOS distros (unzip into a FAT filesystem and then use a bat file to fire em up) that had MONDO -long filenames... I wondered about using DOS to fire them because of the filenames, but it worked.

The only file burn problem I ever had from LFN's is an MP3 file with a long long name... it trunticated, including the extention, and I couldn't use that file, but all others worked ok.

I had never had a problem with file names either. Maybe i just never had a file name that long. I am sure i have with MP3s though.

But there is something else.

the file name has parenthethis in it, like so:
Electric and Telecom Plan (US units).vst

and it would burn like this
Electric and Telecom Plan (US.vst

so it was cutting off a few characters...

ill do some digging around to see what i can come up with.
