Austin here I come.....
« on: August 12, 2003, 12:06:09 pm »
Well, I am going back to Austin next week to be an intern again at the Office of the Attorney General. I will be doing tech support at some level.

I will also be graduating from school this week with an arseociates Degree in Computer System Management, or something like that.

Anyway, last year when I left my biggest concerns were doing the laundry, and ironing. This time around I feel like I am leaving people behind. Especially One.

The plan is to do the internship and to try and look for a permanent job up there. Only time will tell.

So wish me Luck....

i dont know if that is a quote from a movie or what, but there is no way i can. I wouldnt be heading where i am going without help from my roots. or something like that.

i am very lucky to have people behind me that are there for me to help me out when banks, schools, or governments wont help me, despite all the crap i have done without the help from those kinds of places.

hell no i am not forgetting my roots.

Congratulations on the graduation! Hope everything works out for you finding something `permanent up there`.

LOL I always remember `Austin` in a favorite Zappa song ... `Muffin Man` off the `Bongo Fury` LP ...

"Goodnight Austin Texas where ever you are."

Killer tune ... have a killer time in Austin!

I am curious ... you worked for the Attorney General before ... is this what you did on your last trip there? Tech support at some level? What kind? Hardware/software? Do you work for the the department that responds to computer issues within the Attorney General's offices? Someone can't get `Mine Sweep` to work they call you? LOL Seriously, I'm interested ... you got your arseociates degree ... what's the job market like? Locally it may suck but do you have opportunity elsewhere? What do you look for ... I arseume as a recent graduate you get in line for the `entry level support` type positions. Most I talk to go that route and then move up. Most look back at their tech support positions and shudder.

I always wonder what it would take and be like to switch out on professions and go computer tech route. Just seems that some make it and some struggle but then you can say that about any profession. When I broke into the profession I am in now there was a nation wide shortage so I could write my own ticket ... since then things have just gotten worse for employers which just makes my postition that much better. Most times if I hate a place I just have to hint that I am leaving and the front office scrambles. LOL Not patting myself on the back or anything just that it's hard to leave a profession where the demand is high.

/me Pats David on the back... hehe...

Yeah, last year they started me out on the Help Desk. This was pretty boring compared to the crap i had hoped I was doing, basically we take calls from all over the state from people who work for the attorney general and try to help them with their computer problems, mine sweeper, but mainly what i did was reset parsewords!.

common problems were printers not printing, icons disappearing, freezing problems, and crap like that. For every problem they had before there was a database of solutions. and any problems we couldnt help with over the phone, we would send someone over, an ISSS was what they were called, Information System Support Specialist, i think is what it stands for.

Half way through the summer i was asked to go to the ISSS side so that i can try that out. This was a lot better. More hands on work, installing software, hard drives, cd roms, and imaging windows was mainly what we did. We also set up whole offices with computers and crap like that.  Some problems were staight forward, others were not.

As far as the job market goes, i am worried. I will probably end up getting an entry level position at a help desk, i am not to sure how the job market is up there in Austin, but down here in the RIo Grande Valley it is not that great. I am hoping to get on with the attorney general, but that seems unlikely due to fundage...

well, i must go, will back later.....

anyway,

i dont see myself working with computers for the rest of my life, i think this is going to be a stepping stone for something better, i dont know what though. Maybe my own business of some sort or some sort of teacher or something. i dont know.

i think as a computer tech its hard to make yourself "in demand", i mean, there is a bunch of people out there trying to get into the tech world. I need to get certified to put myself a little higher then them. Anyone can get certified. You should look into it. Sometimes a certification or two would look better then a degree. I want both. check out this site. www.comptia.com

I want to take the A+ by November, they going to upgrade it then. i want to take the test that is out there now.

Entry-Level techs like me need to get on the ball to get ahead. I think in Austin i can, because I think i can focus better up there. We will have to see....

Cool. That explains it well ... I always wondered.

One thing I always planned by when I was young and tell my kids now is get a `technical skill` under your belt right away. I say that and then explain not to ignore getting more knowledge and advancing to what you see as your ultimate goal but having a technical skill in the bank pays a lot of bills.

Sounds like you got your head screwed on right ... not that I ever doubted it  ;)

I wish i could see that i have my head on screwed right, i keep wondering what i got myself into this time around, Money is real tight right now, and if i do make it past the first month it is going to be by the skin of my teeth. I just need to get to that first paycheck which should be, should be, by the third, but by then i should be in my own place, sleeping on the floor probably, but i am okay with that, cuz i know its always hard in the beginning. by this time tomorow, Sunday, i should be in Austin.

From this point on i am going to try and "document" my life and work here, whether it is interesting to anyone or not. f it.

wish me luck...
